Criminal Activities
Arson
Intentionally setting fire to a building or structure (arson) or otherwise willfully destroying property by fire. Under U.S. law arson is a felony in most jurisdictions.
Situation:
"At an AA meeting, Charlie explains he was drunk and intended only to make the place smell, but 'burnt it down a little bit,' which led to the court-ordered community service."
Child endangerment
Leaving a child unattended in circumstances that endanger the child's welfare (state laws vary, but leaving an infant in a hot car or otherwise unattended can be criminal child endangerment or neglect).
Situation:
"Before the game, Frank gives a player nicknamed 'Flop' steel-toe boots and tells him, 'Don’t be afraid to use it,' encouraging deliberate harm."
Contributing to the Delinquency of Minors
Encouraging minors to commit violent fouls and providing improvised weapons.
Situation:
"While coaching, Mac hands out safety pins and instructs kids to insert them sharp-side-out in wristbands and stomp on opponents’ feet to break bones; he also drills 'elbows' and 'knees' as tactics."
Game Fixing
Bribing a participant to affect a youth basketball game’s outcome.
Situation:
"Frank buys star player Chris a new bike and tells him not to play, causing Dennis to discover the fix and try to call off the bet."
Illegal Gambling on Youth Sports
Unlawful wagering on the outcome of a children’s community-center basketball game.
Situation:
"After trash talk between coaches, Frank and Dee escalate a bet on Ducks vs. Wildcats from $100 up to $500."
